Bright Learners, Big Country

Kristal Bivona returns from China full of its promise

China is the future.

After a short time in one of its gargantuan metropolises, it becomes clear that China is banking on the future by investing in education, bullet trains, reforestation, and massive construction projects. Students in the U.S. are banking on China’s future by studying Mandarin and pursuing studies on the mainland. Studying abroad in China is a fantastic and often overlooked opportunity: the Chinese people are friendly and welcoming to foreigners; Chinese cities have very little street crime and are much safer than many American cities; the Chinese culture takes studying quite seriously, and students can expect an excellent level of education.

While China is the future, it takes seriously the duty to preserve and remember the past. Old structures such as the famous Great Wall and the smaller Ming Dynasty Wall in Beijing are currently and regularly reinforced and repaired, as are old Buddhist temples and other ruins from past dynasties. Incredible museums tell the narrative of China’s history. Students can go from cosmopolitan urban centers replete with Starbucks stores and fast food chains to secluded and quiet pagodas tucked into a lush green landscape.

The down side to China? American students might miss their Google, their Facebook, their Youtube. However, a university or private party VPN can get around internet censorship. It’s a small price to pay for the unforgettable experience of spending time in China with friends, learning the language and the culture.

Chinese Connections

EF Beijing
EF Beijing offers not just a great setting for studying Mandarin, but for experiencing the rich culture of the city and country through using the language in real world situations, from basic conversation, to shopping in a Chinese marketplace, to exploring the amazing architecture of the city. EF was named Beijing 2008 Olympic Games official Language Training Service Supplier, training 5,000 Chinese citizens, including members of the Olympic Committee, judges and volunteers. The school is a bridge, allowing students to get to know the people behind the language.

The school welcomes students of all ages from every corner of the world and the curriculum uses an intensively structured academic program along with an array of educational and social activities, creating a fast and interesting methodology. All teachers are highly qualified and are certified with professional designations and high academic achievement. Their new school offers modern facilities with the latest in language learning technology combined with fun activities arranged by the school.

iMandarin
With ten years of experience and more than 20 campuses across the country, iMandarin is one of the leading Chinese language providers in China. iMandarin is an affiliate of Neworld Education and is publishing its own learning manuals to match their students’ expectations. They offer a full range of services, group classes, one-to-one classes, cultural classes, Skype lessons, and summer camps for all ages, levels and backgrounds. They offer lessons in Chinese languages, English, Japanese, Korean, Thai, German, and French. Free placement tests and demo classes are available.

Intercultural Student Experiences (ISE)
Teachers of Mandarin bring language to life when they travel to China with their students. ISE’s educational travel program to China immerses students in the language and culture while providing opportunities for them to engage with Chinese people and speak Mandarin. A local bilingual guide accompanies the group full-time, providing valuable insights into culture and language. Visiting the Great Wall, Tian’anmen Square, the Bund, and the Terracotta Army provide classic experiences. On top of that, students are inspired by the personal encounters they have. Students live with host families in Beijing, where they can enjoy a cooking lesson and play ping-pong with neighbors in the courtyard. In a rural village, a lesson in traditional farmers’ painting by the artist himself evolves into a visit to his home. The canals of Suzhou are beautiful while lasting memories are made in an afternoon at a local school. Students stretch their language skills and catch a glimpse of real life in China’s most populous city when they dine with families at home in Shanghai.

Sino Language Gateway

Programs are designed to provide excellence in language study with ample opportunity to interact with local children and to reflect on intercultural encounters in structured settings. The idea is to make sure what students have learned is not just a theory, but a practical ability to communicate in the language, to understand, and to make themselves understood.

The following programs are available:

• For students: summer camp in China: Chinese language and culture Immersion, Leadership & Service; one on one online live Chinese lesson; gap year exchange program in Shanghai.

• For educators: K–12 Superintendent delegation to China; Chinese teacher or program leader professional development program.

From programs that focus on China’s economic development, to programs that inspect China’s ethnic diversity, to courses designed around intensive language instruction, Dragons has a 21-year history of mapping out and delivering programs of exceptional quality and intimacy. No other organization has been in China as long as Dragons, with as many programs, and with such a sustained presence.

Each Dragons China program is limited to twelve students and is staffed with three primary instructors as well as appropriate language staff. Dragons instructors are much more than chaperones: they are informed educators who teach — academically and experientially — about the history, culture, economy, arts, politics, and development issues of modern China. On language-intensive programs, professionally trained language instructors often provide one-on-one instruction for as many as four to six hours of teaching each day.

Program components include: homestay, trekking, leadership, independent study project, language study, service learning, survey of development Issues, comparative religion, and rugged travel.

German Opportunity

There’s never been a better time to immerse in the language of Goethe, engineering, and economic endeavor

The German language has a centuries-long tradition of pumping out the Western world’s best literature, philosophy, art, music, and design. Where would the world be without the symphonies of Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, and Schubert, or the mind-bending ideas of the Frankfurt School? From then until now, German engineering and scientific advancement are at the world’s cutting edge.

Germany is the European Union’s (EU’s) economic powerhouse, and its economy is comparable to that of all the world’s Spanish-speaking countries combined. Germany’s success has been attracting immigrants from around the world, particularly Southern European countries and Turkey.

For language students, German opens doors. German boasts the most native speakers in the EU, and students can choose their adventures among countless unique destinations in the German-speaking world: postmodern Berlin, historic Vienna, charming Alpine villages, the Black Forest, Bavaria. With so many options, Language Magazine has compiled a list of some of the finest language institutions in Germany and Austria.

ALPADIA Language Schools

ALPADIA offers the chance to learn German language and culture in Germany’s capital or in the heart of the Black Forest, with adult year-round courses in Berlin and Freiburg. With over 25 years’ experience in teaching German, ALPADIA knows that language learning and culture are invariably linked. Offering language immersion in a stimulating and multicultural environment, the schools are located close to cultural highlights that are easily accessible by public transportation or by foot.

Berlin offers fans of architecture a chance to be bewitched by the surprising mix of modern buildings and historical monuments. History buffs will revel in visiting the city’s countless museums.

As for art lovers, they will be spoiled for choice in this cultural hotspot. Then, students enjoy some peace and quiet in Berlin’s many parks and green spaces, ideal to chilling out and practicing sports. Freiburg’s historical center offers bustling marketplaces and welcoming cafés, with over 400 kilometers of cycle lanes. Programs offer the perfect combination between lessons and activities, using a communicative style of teaching, and giving students the opportunity to practice their language skills while truly experiencing the local culture.

Humboldt Institut

The Humboldt-Institut offers intensive programs for many target groups: from summer camps for children for grades 8–12 to special courses for university students to highly specialized language training for executives, there is a course for every need. This nonprofit organization for German as a foreign language has grown from just one school in 1977 to 15 course centers, including two year-round schools exclusively for young learners (ten to 17-year-olds) in Lindenberg and Bad Schussenried, two year-round schools for adults in Constance and Berlin, ten summer centers all over Germany, and a summer center in Vienna.

All schools are residential, as the Humboldt-Institut believes in total immersion: the learning process takes place not only in the classroom but also during meals, leisure activities after class, and weekend excursions. This concept proves to be very successful in preparing international students for standardized exams like the TestDaF: a total beginner with no previous German skills can successfully complete this very demanding exam (a prerequisite for university admission in Germany) in as little as seven and a half months.

Berlitz Deutschland GmbH
Out of the more than 50 Berlitz Centers in Germany, two especially popular destinations are Berlin and Munich. Life in Berlin is vibrant: cafés, hotels, shops, museums, theaters — it’s a cosmopolitan city with international flair. The school is situated on the famous Kurfürstendamm in the heart of the city. In Munich, Bavaria’s metropolis, it’s the mix that makes the difference. Old meets new, past meets present and future, the modern blends harmoniously with the traditional. The school is located right in the city center on the lovely Marienplatz.

Cultura Wien
Founded in 1987, Cultura Wien has gained a reputation as one of Austria’s leading German language schools and offers programs to suit both adults and young learners. Whether students want to improve their German for university, to further their careers, or simply for their own personal development, the school has the right course, with customized language training for basic-, intermediate-, or advanced-level learners. Native-speaking teachers guide their students to help them perfect both the written and spoken aspects of the language. The most popular summer courses combine learning German language with a relaxed atmosphere. The extensive cultural and activity programs ensure students use their German as they enjoy all that Vienna’s rich culture has to offer and make friends with students from all over the world.

The accurate placement of students according to language level and the regular monitoring of learning progress are standard features. They help language learners succeed by providing quality, intensive lessons using a tried-and-tested system. German courses are offered year round for all levels, with over 42 course start dates during the year for beginners. Best of all, multiple course locations and training programs can be combined.

The 15-day Bayern und Berlin itinerary allows students to experience the unique cultures of both northern and southern Germany. They’ll start by exploring the sights and sounds of Munich, then visit the castles of Mad King Ludwig before discovering the medieval charm of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The real adventure comes as students experience authentic German life and put their language skills to the test while living with gastfamilien. There, they’ll explore the history-rich streets, visiting the remains of the Berlin wall, bullet-ridden buildings from WWII, and the contemporary architecture of the reunified city.

Lure of the Sur

Kristal Bivona finds there’s no time like the present to immerse oneself in Latin America

There’s never been a better time to study Spanish or Portuguese. Hispanic America and Brazil are projected to have bright economic futures, which will naturally increase the demand for speakers of Spanish or Portuguese in the business world. Of course, where business goes, students follow. Learning Spanish or Portuguese is an investment in one’s career: workers can earn more simply for being bilingual. Knowing Spanish or Portuguese, however, only gives special access to part of Latin America, so many companies who work in Latin America want employees who speak both. Fortunately, speakers of Romance languages tend to pick up other Romance languages relatively quickly. The other good news is that even students who are already proficient in Spanish or Portuguese have an excuse to go abroad and experience a new language and culture.

Hispanic America is wildly diverse and has something for every type of traveler or student. Starting north with Mexico, famous for its one-of-a-kind tourist destinations and beaches, its sprawling cosmopolitan capital city, lush jungles, endless deserts, and exceptional cuisine, then going south to Patagonia, with snow-capped mountains, ski resorts, and fantastic wilderness, Hispanic America has nearly every climate in between: the tropics, mild regions ideal for winemaking, mountains calling to be conquered by adventurers, places with four seasons, places with just a rainy season and a dry season. Furthermore, those who prefer cities have some of the world’s finest and most interesting to choose from: Buenos Aires, Santiago, Lima, Bogotá, Medellín, and Guadalajara.

Meanwhile, Brazil’s giant territory has enviable landscapes, from Rio de Janeiro’s Atlantic Forest and beaches to the Lençóis Maranhenses white sand with azure pools to the awe-inspiring Sertão, not to mention São Paulo’s sophistication, Bahia’s Afro-Brazilian hospitality, and Belém do Pará’s mystery at the edge of the Amazon rainforest.

With so many exciting opportunities to choose from, we’ve compiled a list of some of the most inviting programs for learning Spanish and Portuguese, with a special emphasis on summer camps. Also included are some programs in Spain for those students seeking European flavor and immersion programs right here in the U.S.

Amistad Institute
Founded in 2003, Amistad Institute is an organization located in Heredia, Jaco Beach, Monteverde Cloud Forest, and Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica. Amistad’s founders have nearly 20 years’ experience in the language immersion and volunteer industry with specializations in language training, volunteering for social development, nonprofit administration, and tourism. They are a team of experienced professionals who are passionate about offering Spanish language, volunteer, and travel experiences in Costa Rica. Amistad offers a wide variety of volunteer opportunities for international students around beautiful Costa Rica.

Spanish Abroad
Spanish Abroad has offered summer Spanish camps in Latin America and Spain for nearly two decades. During this time, different program options through partner language schools have been refined to include intensive language-immersion courses, fun activities, and housing options that meet the needs of children and families when parents come along to learn Spanish. The summer camp in Tamarindo, Costa Rica, is popular, with children from five to 13 years old taking part in intensive Spanish courses along with cultural and beach activities in the afternoon. In addition, they go on adventure tours, including zip-lining and visits to the monkey park. Intercambios are arranged to practice their Spanish with local children. The entire family can stay with a host family, and parents as well as teens can take Spanish courses and surf instruction at the language school located right on Tamarindo Beach. In Spain, summer Spanish camp options with children’s, teen, and adult courses are offered in San Sebastian, Barcelona, Salamanca, Marbella, and Madrid. Full summer Spanish camps are at local boarding schools with all-inclusive language instruction, activities, excursions, meals, airport transfers, and shared room and board. Private apartments can be arranged at any location.

Concordia Language Villages
Concordia Language Villages has been bringing Spanish alive for youth ages seven to 18 since 1963. Located in the north woods of Minnesota, Spanish is one of 15 language immersion camps offered each summer, known as Language Villages. At El Lago del Bosque, the Spanish Language Village, villagers are immersed in the sights, sounds, tastes, and experiences of the Spanish-speaking world. Villagers learn new vocabulary and conversational skills while eating authentic, home-cooked meals featuring foods from a variety of Spanish-speaking countries or while participating in cultural activities, from canto or arte (art) to playing a game of fútbol. Villagers also experience traditional summer camp activities, such as time around la fogata (campfire). Each day, villagers also receive language lessons tailored to their abilities. The ultimate goal of all programming is an immersion experience in language and culture that motivates participants to be lifelong learners and to become responsible citizens in a global community.

In four weeks at the Spanish Academy, 88% of students accelerate their language learning by one full level, and 45% of all students gain two or more language levels on the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language’s proficiency scale. As part of the Spanish Academy, students take the Language pledge, a formal commitment to communicate in their target language at all times during the summer of study. The pledge comes from a long history of tried-and-true immersion education and formalizes students’ dedication to effective language practice for absolute beginners through to advanced language learners. Whether students study in the U.S. or abroad in Spain, they will gain tangible language skills, applicable to real-life settings, while also partaking in a variety of cultural activities. Students might have the opportunity to learn the art of flamenco or how to make tapas or empanadas, take an excursion to a local Spanish or Latin American restaurant, write and produce their own Spanish film, visit museums, and more. From morning assembly until lights out, students will be immersed in Spanish language and culture, among likeminded peers.

Ecela Spanish
Ecela Spanish, with language immersion institutes in Santiago and Viña del Mar, Chile, plus schools in Argentina and Peru, promises to take novice students to near Spanish fluency in five to seven months. Their distinct teaching approach centers on learning by speaking, with 60% of class time spent in conversation “micro groups” of only four students. Cinema Latino movie nights, “turbo privados” (one student, two teachers), and conversation exchanges with locals enhance the intensive and enjoyable learning experience. Because Ecela attracts students from all over the world, people often cite their unexpected, international new friendships as the program highlight. A yearly reunion weekend is held each March, rotating between Argentina, Chile, and Peru. The event is exclusive to “Familia Ecela” (ex–Ecela students and past and current staff members). Although most students arrive as beginners or intermediates, Ecela is also popular with Spanish instructors looking for skill enrichment. During summer 2015, a special seminar will give 16 educators a chance to experience Chilean culture and boost their teaching skills. The special program is exclusively for Spanish instructors whose native language is not Spanish.

Cutting to the Common Core: Sticking to the Script

Timothy Shanahan reassesses the role of handwriting in literacy development

My father, who had no more than an eighth-grade education, wrote in a beautiful Palmer hand. His one-room schoolhouse education did not promise to take him far, but it did allow him to place words on paper in an elegant and readable manner. And this skill had practical utility beyond its aesthetic beauty, since he worked for many years as a bookkeeper.

But the public value of handwriting has diminished during the ensuing century. In fact, the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) don’t even mention handwriting, cursive, or manuscript printing.

Breaking Barriers to German

Alexander Voll celebrates the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall

The “Anti-Fascist Protective Barrier,” as the wall was called by East German authorities, divided Berlin for nearly 30 years. Far from protecting anyone, its purpose was to keep the citizens of the GDR imprisoned, as the mass emigration of East Germans to the West threatened economic stability.

Erected between 1961 and 1975, the wall separated the city right down the middle, cutting off vital traffic links and breaking apart families. Minefields and border police with shoot-to-kill orders thwarted any further attempts by East Germans to look for a better future in the West. While the Communists tightened their authoritarian grip on people’s lives in East Berlin, the Western part of the city became a walled-in outpost of freedom and democracy, thanks to an enormous effort made by the Western allies — especially the U.S.

Mikhail Gorbachev then embarked on reforms in the Soviet Union — Perestroika and Glasnost encouraged protestors in Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic to believe that change was possible. Frustrated by the unwillingness of the East German regime to allow reforms, people started to express their anger in weekly demonstrations in Leipzig and other East German cities. These so-called Monday demonstrations grew rapidly, culminating when hundreds of thousands of people demonstrated in the fall of 1989. After decades of oppression, their peaceful approach and demands for fundamental human rights had mobilized the masses.

East German authorities, realizing that they could not rely on support from Soviet troops, finally gave in to protesters’ demands: on November 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall fell, enabling the 17 million citizens of East Germany to travel freely across the border. Families and friends were reunited and the arbitrary division ended.

With the support of the U.S., Germany was reunited in 1990. The fall of the wall was the result of a popular uprising demanding liberty and self-determination — the victory of nonviolence over an oppressive government and human dignity over dictatorship. Not only did it allow Germany to reunite, but it also ended the arbitrary division of Europe into two opposing camps. The remnants of the wall have become a symbol for peaceful revolutions; their legacy remains vital in the 21st century.

Please visit www.Germany.info for more information on what the German embassy in Washington is doing to commemorate this formative event.

They may be at opposite ends of the Arab world but both Morocco and Oman offer international students the cultural experience of a lifetime within safe environments

Morocco

Arabic Language Institute in Fez (ALIF)
ALIF has a reputation as one of the preeminent institutions in the Maghreb for the teaching of Arabic as a foreign language. Housed in a large, shady villa, it provides an ideal setting for studying in Morocco’s “intellectual capital” and for exploring the historic medina of Fez, one of the world’s few remaining medieval cities.

Teachers are highly qualified native speakers with years of experience instructing both independent students and study abroad groups from major universities. Former students include translators, Fulbright, FLAS, NSEP, and SSRC grantees, company representatives, and graduate students from major universities in the U.S. and Europe.
Resources include an extensive library collection focusing on Arabic linguistics, the Maghreb, Islamic art and architecture, and Islam. The library also has a DVD collection with nearly 1,000 films that students are welcome to borrow. The ALIF/ALC bookstore has a superb collection of books related to Morocco and the Arab world. In addition to language courses, cultural tours, lectures, and classes on Maghrebi literature, media, and Islam are offered. Private courses in any number of subject areas can be arranged. Reasonable fees and the low cost of living in Morocco make immersion programs a cost-effective option.

The Moroccan Center for Arabic Studies
As well as offering Arabic language programs, the Center features study abroad programs, a volunteering program, and internship placements. Students can combine the programs to create a customized experience. Students, volunteers, and interns can soon get immersed into Moroccan culture and the Arab world. Participants can take part in trips around Morocco, visiting some of the most amazing and beautiful cities in the world, such as Marrakech, Fez, and Chefchaouen, as well as the desert.

Faculty members have been involved in the planning, administration, and delivery of a variety of Arabic language intensive programs like CLS, SIT Study Abroad, and the SALAM program, and the institute has been hosting a CLS summer program for Arabic for the last two years. Teachers at NMTI aim at developing all four language skills while using the target language exclusively as language of instruction. Fees include 80 hours of tuition per month, accommodation in student dorms, transportation to the institute, and daily lunches, as well as two excursions per course.
