    JOB SUMMARY: The Educational Interpreter is responsible for transliterating/interpreting in the classroom or at school-related activities for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Daily classroom instructions and materials are provided by the general education and DHH teacher.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
    1. Facilitates communication between the student and his peers and the student and adults in the school environment
    2. Studies the content of the lessons prior to class to ensure accurate representation of the lesson
    3. Tutors students who are deaf or hard of hearing under the direction of the teacher
    4. Provides feedback to teachers upon request
    5. Serves as a liaison to promote positive and cooperative relationships within the school environment
    6. May teach beginning sign language to students or staff
    7. Other duties as assigned

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
    Minimum Qualifications
    • Associates degree in Educational Interpreting from accredited program
    • Minimum two years of experience
    • Certification in Sign Language
    • Working knowledge of subjects being interpreted

    Desirable Qualifications
    • Competence in the communication modality used by the student who is deaf or hard of hearing
    • Competence in English grammar, including syntax, spelling and punctuation
    • Working knowledge of typical language development
    • Strong interpersonal skills in relating to students and adults

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
    WORK ENVIRONMENT:
    Strength: Sedentary/Medium – Lifting of objects with a strength factor of light work

    Physical Demands: Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a  computer, hand-held learning devices and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds

    Environmental Conditions: Pleasant working conditions. Class areas are normally clean and well lighted. Some schools provide individual offices for the teachers. Duties may be occasionally performed on field trips away from school. Reasonable  accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions

    Hazards: Furniture, playground/office equipment, communicable diseases, chemicals and fumes (as related to specific assignment), and power/hand-operated equipment and machinery (as related to specific assignment)
