    GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
    To assist the teacher in the instruction of limited-English proficient (LEP) students in the regular classroom setting in order to improve academic success and the dropout rate.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
    1. Supports the classroom environment in a manner that helps LEP students to  succeed
    2. Plans and prepares for the instructional activities with the classroom teacher
    3. Works with small groups of LEP students to reinforce material initially introduced by the teacher
    4. Assists with individual LEP students in need of special attention
    5. Guides independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work assigned by the teacher
    6. Provides personalized support through the interpretation of important terminology and concepts so that LEP students have increased access to content
    7. Meets the diverse needs of LEP students relative to improving achievement and making the school experience meaningful, thus improving the dropout rate
    8. Provides support to classroom teachers in meeting the needs of LEP students at different levels of English language proficiency
    9. Provides support to LEP students to help them meet the same rigorous state content area assessments and achievement standards as other students
    10. Provides scaffolding supports to assist LEP students in learning the state curriculum as they develop language skills
    11. Participates in appropriate in-service activities
    12. Attends meetings of the school as directed
    13. Attends student events to demonstrate genuine interest in the life of the students
    14. Observes student performance and assists LEP students in work as it is being done
    17. Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with others
    18. Strives to be desirable example for students in attitude, actions, speech, and dress
    19. Performs such other tasks and assumes responsibilities as may be assigned by the classroom teacher or school administrator

    MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
    1. High school diploma or equivalent
    2. For Title 1 schools, the following is required: Associates Degree or 48 Hours of college credit or verified HQ status from another source
    3. Shall possess an understanding of the cultural differences and needs of the Latino community
    4. Shall be bilingual with a command of both English and Spanish, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary
    5. Such alternatives to the above and qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
    Physical Requirement: Ability to lift and/or carry 30 lbs. Must be able to work in an office atmosphere for the duration of the work day
    Interpersonal Communication: Ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information including giving instructions to subordinates and receiving instructions, assignments and/or directions from superiors
    Language Ability: Fluent in the English language. Ability to correspond in both verbal and written communication
    Intelligence: Ability to apply principles or rational systems as applied to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists, to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral diagrammatic, or scheduled form
    Verbal Aptitude: Comfortable with public speaking. Ability to dictate correspondence. Ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions
    Numerical Aptitude: Ability to utilize mathematical formulas, to add and subtract totals, multiply and divide, and to determine percentages and decimals
    Motor Coordination: Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and typical office equipment
    Interpersonal Temperament: Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress
    Physical Communication: Ability to talk and hear. Must be able to communicate via a telephone and a computer

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
    Knowledge of office practices and procedures
    Knowledge of mathematical aptitude
    Knowledge of business letter writing and memos
    Knowledge of planning principles
    Skills in operating a computer with word processing, spreadsheet and desktop publishing applications
    Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
    Ability to reason, make judgments, and maintain effective working relationships with others
    Ability to compile and summarize information
    Ability to resolve problem situations with sound judgment
    Ability to demonstrate proper telephone etiquette
    Ability to maintain confidentiality in matters relating to the school system
    Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing work assignments
    Ability to compose correspondence independently
    Ability to work in the absence of supervision
