The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages has published updated Proficiency Guidelines for foreign language instructors. The new guidelines include two proficiency levels above Advanced: Distinguished and Superior. The Advanced level has been broken into three sublevels: High, Mid and Low.
These guidelines are not to be interpreted as a suggestion on how languages are acquired or how they should be taught, but rather as a description of what students can and cannot do at each level. The guidelines are organized by the four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking, and have information about students’ functional abilities at each level. ACTFL’s Proficiency Guidelines are a tool for language level assessment.
