Language Capabilities Lead to Better Jobs

In Wenatchee, Washington volunteers help hundreds of immigrants learn English through a nonprofit called The Literacy Council. Students get free one-on-one English classes with volunteers. In addition to English as a Second Language, Literacy Council volunteers also help U.S. born people who want to gain or improve their reading and writing skills.

Students, like Mexican-born Alfonso Flores, know that their opportunities in the job market increase with their language skills.

Flores told the Wenatchee World, “English helped me get my job, keep my job and improve my job. It’s very, very important.”
