Palo Alto

Stanford University seeks an Assistant University Librarian for Collection Development (Humanities and Social Sciences). The AUL/CD reports to the University Librarian and coordinates with The Stanford University Libraries and Academic Information Resources (SULAIR) Assistant and Associate University Librarians, the Director of Academic Computing Services, and other senior staff officers. This is a senior leadership position with general responsibility for the overall success and efficacy of all of SULAIR’s programs over and above the specific administrative and programmatic responsibilities generally defined in this document. The AUL/CD is responsible for collection development within all humanities and social science subject areas. Collection development is viewed holistically at Stanford, with a focus on the content of the information object, rather than its format. Thus the AUL/CD will oversee the acquisition of a broad spectrum of materials, from traditional print to media to digital. The AUL/CD provides general direction and specific supervision to selectors in the Humanities and Area Studies Resources Group, the Social Sciences Resources Group, the Department of Special Collections, and the Art & Architecture, East Asia, Education, and Music Libraries (including the Archive of Recorded Sound). In doing so, the AUL/CD works particularly closely with the Assistant University Librarian for Public Services (AUL/PS), who is responsible for the services offered by those units and has administrative oversight of the personnel in those groups. The AUL/CD also works especially closely with the Associate University Librarian for Science and Engineering Libraries (AUL/S&E) with regard to collection development policies, practices, budgeting, and fund-raising across SULAIR, and works regularly with the Associate University Librarian for Technical and Access Services on workflows and on contracts and relationships with vendors and suppliers. The AUL/CD works with the Director of Academic Computing Services, the AUL/PS, and the AUL/S&E in understanding and responding to, faculty and student needs, and developing innovative products and services. Digitization of information resources, the development of digital collections and libraries, and the relocation of physical collections will all be important areas of activity for this officer in the near future. The Stanford University Libraries and Academic Information Resources (SULAIR) encompasses a range of responsibilities and capacities for supporting academic uses of information and information technologies. SULAIR is unique in American higher education in including digital and traditional library collections and services, academic computing services and support, university press publishing in digital and traditional formats, and Internet publishing services within a single organization. For the disciplines encompassed by the Humanities and Area Studies Resource Group, the Social Sciences Resources Groups, the Department of Special Collections, and the Art & Architecture, East Asia, Education, and Music Libraries, the AUL/CD develops, manages, and oversees collection development policies and practices, in cooperation with other senior SULAIR officers, oversees collection management and deployment, oversees collection reviews, supervises selectors in their collection development responsibilities, and interacts with faculty and students, among other duties. An advanced degree in one of the disciplines in the humanities, area studies, and/or social sciences is required; a Ph.D. is preferred. Significant successful experience as a selector for research level library collection(s) in an institution with roughly comparable programs of research and teaching to Stanford is required. A library or information science degree at the master’s level, as well as education, training, and/or experience demonstrating effective command of research library practices and policies, are highly desirable. Significant successful experience as a manager of library or similar operations for a period of roughly five years is required. Effective command of one or more languages beyond English, along with effective and deep engagement with cultures and customs other than North American are highly desirable. The candidate should demonstrate thorough engagement with both traditional and emerging definitions and concerns of leading research libraries, including, but not limited to, digital and media formats and objects. Applications should include a letter stating interest and pointing out the applicant’s match to qualifications stated herein as well as a résumé and the contact coordinates for at least three persons able to attest to the education, experience, work history, and qualifications of the applicant. We will consult references beyond those provided by the applicants. The search process will involve interviews at Stanford by a panel of faculty members, selectors, and SULAIR senior leaders of applicants who we judge to be leading candidates for the position. Applications are invited immediately, but the search will continue until the position is filled. We will inform applicants of the course of the search periodically.
